My PhD research project focuses on the White Group (Baituan), Chiang Kai-shek’s military advisory group consisting of pre-war Japanese Imperial Army, who helped Chiang win the Battle of Jinmen in 1949 and the 1958 Taiwan Strait Crisis, consolidated the status of the Republic of China (ROC) in Taiwan and built the backbone of the post-1949 ROC Armed Forces. My study seeks to shed some light on what Baituan taught ROC military officers and on Baituan’s positive and negative impacts on Taiwan. Other topics that I am interested in are international relations of East Asia, settler colonialism, history of Taiwan under the Japanese colonial rule, the post-war Japan-Taiwan relations, and the influences of the Japanese Empire on militarism in East Asian countries.
