    James is currently employed by the Australian Government, working on a range of bilateral issues relating to international education, science and research diplomacy with Japan and Northeast Asia.

    Spending almost nine years at the University of Kobe, first on a MEXT scholarship to complete his PhD, and later on a Japan Society for the Promotional Science international postdoctoral fellowship, he completed numerous publications on Japan’s postwar diplomacy in Southeast Asia.

    A three month visiting scholar opportunity at FAMES in 2013, culminated in the recently published research ‘Japan’s Cold War diplomacy and its return to Southeast Asia’ (Asia Pacific Review, December 2014).
