In the wake of Japan’s devastating defeat in WWII, much has been made of the great changes that took place within Japan in the postwar period. This lecture by Professor Brian Victoria will introduce the postwar activities of one key Japanese military figure involved in the reconfiguration of postwar Asia, i.e., Imperial Army Col. Tsuji Masanobu. Tsuji’s activities in the postwar period included those of a Buddhist monk, spy, mercenary, fugitive from justice, popular politician and, ultimately, quixotic diplomat.
